Ernesto Gomez Sanchez Killed, Two Others Injured in Fatal Crash Near Alton, TX

At Approximately 12:03 a.m. on September 24, 2022, the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to an early morning crash north of Alton.  It happened on Moorefield Road, south of FM 681.  According to Rio Grande Valley News, 42-year-old Walter Enrique Martinez is charged with Intoxication Manslaughter and Intoxication Assault for the crash that took the life of 65-year-old Ernesto Gomez Sanchez and injured two others.  A preliminary investigation revealed that Martinez was traveling northbound on Moorefield Road when he crashed into a blue GMC Sierra that was traveling southbound.  Reports indicate that Mr. Sanchez, who died at the scene, was a passenger in a Mazda 6 driven by Mr. Martinez, who was transported to the hospital before being transferred to the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center.   Jail records indicate MIssion police arrested Martinez a little more than a year ago on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
